Rashel sees her mother and best friend Timmy killed by a vampire when she's five years old.
She then becomes a vampire hunter in revenge. She and Quinn her vampire soulmate have an interesting relationship and I love how the book ends too. Soulmate- a bit frustrating because the main character is a little slow at catching on that Maya is evil.
This story goes right back to Night World legends that are mentioned in each story. The "old soul" idea is again, really good, but the story seems to go on that little bit too long. It was nice to see some old faces introduces as Circle Daybreak, a group whose mission is to promote peace among all species.
I'll definitely be buying the next book because I'm desperate to find out how the series will develop. Read this book if you love the paranormal romance genre and if you love Twilght then this is so much better. Oct 22, Rob rated it liked it Shelves: horror-thriller , young , fantasy. This is obviously written for teenagers, but it's not bad for all that.
In fact, I rather enjoyed it, overall. At least the author provides a reason for all 'made' lamia, hereditary vampires, are another matter vampires being teenagers—apparently, the process of transformation will kill anyone older than nineteen. The only real problem I have with the book, that's inserted into all three stories, is the rather saccharine "soulmate' principle; the idea that everyone in the world has one perfect This is obviously written for teenagers, but it's not bad for all that.
The only real problem I have with the book, that's inserted into all three stories, is the rather saccharine "soulmate' principle; the idea that everyone in the world has one perfect match that he or she can be happy with in this lifetime and the next and the next, in once case at least.
Strikes me as a raw deal for some, but I suppose that's life, or unlife as the case may be. It wouldn't be quite so bad were it not a fundamental principle of Smith's world, one that is now, according to some, trying to change the very way the Night World and the day world?
The idea that love conquers all is, I suppose, too much, in this incarnation, anyway, for a doddering old cynic like me to buy. But odds are, when I was a teenager I would have loved—scratch that, as a teenager, I would have been profoundly depressed by it. But that's another story. So far, Night World is my favorite L. Smith series, because it is the most cracktastic. It is full of the kinds of stuff your sixteen-year-old id comes up with and incorporates into your private vast crossover-ridden original fiction playground.
Everybody mashes up all their favorite characters and tropes into a personal fantasy playground when they're sixteen, right? It has a secret history of the world, in which there is a Night World of witches, vampires, and shapeshifters, So far, Night World is my favorite L. It has a secret history of the world, in which there is a Night World of witches, vampires, and shapeshifters, who are now trying to bring on the apocalypse, opposed only by an idealistic group of humans, witches, vampires, and shapeshifters with a nifty cool name Circle Daybreak , and also there are soulmate bonds, reincarnation, and, lately, dragons.
Sadly I am not as keen on soulmate bonds now as I was when I was sixteen, but L. Smith still is. Also, she is far too fond of vampires boring! Full review. Nov 11, Anna The Bursting Bookshelf rated it really liked it. As I said before, I really don't like these covers but after reading the first book in the series I just had to read this one.
I mean HAD to. They portrayed exactly what I wanted in a book at the time. At the time they were perfect for me. And at the time I really didn't have an eye for detail. I thought 'These stories are just flawless. Why can't all books be like this? Well looking back, it's a good thing I didn't get my wish cause if I did, all books would be fairly repetitive. Don't get me wrong, I love htese books but by the time you get to the second book of the same thing, it gets boring.
All and all I love these books anyways and I highly recomend you read the books especially if you're jus getting serious with reading and you have nothing to read. They are a great starting point and don't be daunted by their length, because it's like you're reading three books, but you paid for one :. Feb 09, Carrol rated it really liked it. I really like the format of the smaller stories. You get to know each of the characters intimately, knowing their background and paranormal history.
Some creatures are born as such and some are created, making each an individual with original thought processes. And just when you believe the book is about to end with yet another three stories completed, the author starts corralling them all together in the same place and time to form a team of Night Worlders who will attempt to save us all - I really like the format of the smaller stories.
And just when you believe the book is about to end with yet another three stories completed, the author starts corralling them all together in the same place and time to form a team of Night Worlders who will attempt to save us all - adding yet another dimension to the story telling. Definitely a must read! This book has three short stories that are all set in this interesting supernatural world. It was not what I was not expecting it to be so modern because it was written before I was born.
My favorite story in this book has to be the second one, of course the vampire story. Although there are all types of Supernatural creatures in each each story, each story tended to surround one type of supernatural being. The characters were all different, with different strengths and different weaknesses. Overall I feel that I should give the other voice and try as well! I love this series. It's really interseting, i'd reccomend it.
I Loved the second story in this book, i think it's my fave outta the whole series Jan 01, NightmareMaven rated it really liked it. A great anthology of stories set in the same world! A must for any supernatural romance lover! The stories cross paths from time-to-time, as well. Mar 06, Alex Bennett marked it as to-read. However, after reading it again I found it to be fantastic, though it is still not up to par with other books in the series. I found the whole dynamic behind Angel to be fascinating. The way Gillian changes throughout the book—not just physically but inside as well was interesting and thought-provoking.
Though the Night World aspect of this book is very lightly touched on—making this an almost contemporary read—I still found it to be a book I would want to read again.
I know I seem like such an outrageous fanboy for saying it, but she really is my favorite writer. She started off Dark Angel with a bang, and had me anxiously reading until the story ended.
Angel was dark and mysterious, but had a transformation that made me like him despite his evil intentions throughout the novel. A fast-paced story with a strong message, Dark Angel is a great addition to the Night World series.
Smith and the Night World books would be foolish to not read it. The Chosen The Night World books are always a pleasure. They are not the best-written novels, yet they are enjoyable and quick. The Chosen is unique among the other books in the series; the atmosphere of the book is much darker and fiercer than any other Night World book. The unique hatred that the protagonist harbors for the inhabitants of the Night World is sometimes shared by readers, yet sometimes the overwhelming excitement and magic of the fictional world forces readers to depart from the negative opinions of the narrator.
The Chosen is darker, edgier than the other novels in the Night World series. One could compare it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not only because the narrator hunts vamps, but because of the overall atmospheric tone of the novel.
I personally really enjoyed this stark shift in narrative tone compared to the other Night World novels. The plot and narration of this series can sometimes feel repetitive, but The Chosen effectively mixes things up a bit while still staying true to the series's core.
Smith is a very special author to me. She was one of the first authors who curtailed me into the world of young adult literature, and for that I admit I am grateful.
As I have grown older, reading and rereading Smith's work, however, I have begun to fall disenchanted. I still enjoy reading her novels, of course, yet as I have grown to be a more critical reader I have noticed many more flaws than I originally did. Smith and her novels will always hold a special place in my heart, yet as I continue to read her work I know that I will be doing so with much more criticism.
One of the most unique aspects of The Chosen, especially compared to the other Night World novels, in the narrator. Instead of the typical unsuspecting mortal girl, Rashel knows all about the Night World before the story even begins.
And she despises it. Having such a negative connotation attached to the Night World by the narrator was very interesting. Readers are able to experience Rashel's first experience with the creatures of the Night World, which allows us to understand why she harbors such hatred for the "monsters.
The Chosen is unique in that it could very well stand alone as a quick novel about a fierce vampire slayer. Yet, it fits seamlessly with the other Night World novels. It is unique among the other books in its series and was certainly entertaining throughout. After rereading The Chosen, I am eager to pick up more of Smith's work to rediscover why I fell in love with it in the first place. Soulmate To-read. Oct 08, S. P Samantha rated it really liked it.
Night world by L. Book One: Dark Angel After a near death experience in a forest, Gillian Lennon is brought to back to life by someone who calls them self Angel. He makes her the most desired girl in the school and gives her the boyfriend she has always dreamed of having. Everything is going great until Angel starts making strange requests and Gillian realizes she is hurting people by doing what he says.
It was oke.. I liked Angel a lot, but it was not my favorite book from the series.. Not that Gillian and David aren't cute they are.. But Angel was something different I liked the Humor for a wile. Book Two: The Chosen To avenge the death of her mother, best friend, and aunt, and the disappearance of her brother Timmy, Rashel Jordan becomes a vampire hunter.
But when she meets her soul mate John Quinn, she finds out that he is from the world she has vowed to destroy. And I like the part that He admit that he have to apologize to some of the guys in his familie.. She thinks she's going insane, so she goes to a phycologist and goes back through time, literally, reliving her past lives, connecting to each of them to eventually find out about her true soulmate, the Lord of the Night World.
