I have no really serious complaints about the performances, however. The St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra plays overall well, however, under the direction of Andre Anichanov, even if slightly more glitter and sparkle could perhaps be imagined. The sound quality is acceptable, too, if a bit muddy. On this fine double CD, the complete score of the music from The Red Poppy, in three Acts and lasting almost two hours, is played by the St.
As well as being a composer, professionally Gliere was a teacher at the Conservatories in Kiev and Moscow. Sergei Prokofiev was one of his private pupils. The Red Poppy was first staged at the Bolshoi Theatre in The story, set in a Chinese port of Shanghai, concerns a dancer Tao-Hoa who falls in love with a Soviet sea Captain and gives him a red poppy as a token of her love.
The girl's manager Li-Shan-Fu tries to kill the captain by making Tao-Hoa give him poisoned tea, but she refuses. Later in the story, in a coolie uprising, Tao-Hoa saves the captain's life but she is later shot by Li-Shan-Fu. As she dies, she hands another red poppy to a young girl to give to the Captain. The music is lyrical and dramatic in turns and makes for enjoyable listening on its own though of course seeing the ballet danced would be the ideal way to hear the music.
